TRIBAL METALWORK, "DHOKRA" BETEL BOX (purse). . . .made from Bronze and Copper
based alloys . . and using a LOST WAX casting technique. There are several processes in the making of Dhokra, and one piece could take a lengthy time to complete.
Even today , the Tribal Artists are using this ancient (4000 year old) technique. There are only 2 Regions in India where this work is made . . . the tribal regions of ODISHA and WEST BENGAL.
This wonderful piece is from the tribal region of 0DISHA. We collected this DHOKRA Betel Box . . .also called a "Money Purse" in BHUBANESWAR. from an Antique Shop . . .outside of a Magnificent and Ancient SHIVA TEMPLE there. . . . Traditionally this item was used by a Man in Tribal India . . .He would tuck it into the waist part of his lunghi (traditional cothing worn by man. . basically like a sarong but fashioned differently on the body.) i have seen this being done on a local bus in rural India.
