This recently framed work, featuring this original c. 1939 lithograph, illustrates the well known Common Grackle bird / 'Purple' Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula).
The common grackle was first described in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus in the 'Systema Naturae', as Gracula quiscula. A wonderful illustration by ornithologist and bird artist Allan Brooks, from the National Assoc. of Audubon Societies "Summer Birds of North America'.

Allan Cyril Brooks (1869 – 1946) Canadian ornithologist and illustrator. Brooks painting style is more shops impressionist with a greater emphasis on the bird habitat. After his contemporary Louis Agassiz Fuertes' passing in 1927, Brooks was commissioned to complete the illustrations for volume 3 of 'Birds of Massachusetts'.
