A bit about Kantha…
Kantha simply means “patched cloth” and refers to both the tradition of making these unique quilted blankets as well as the small straight running stitch used within the work. The idea behind kantha is to make something useful and beautiful from unused and discarded fabrics, most often silk or cotton saris. This has been a tradition for more than 500 centuries shops and whilst it originated as a practical practise to keep warm it has developed into a real art and craft. The kantha stitch originates from the Bay or Bengal in India and Bangladesh.
Fabric Care…
Vintage and recycled fabrics can be delicate so we recommend hand washing cool with gentle detergent and dry flat. If your purchase is something like a bag with leather straps then spot clean only. A kantha quilt can be washed in a machine on a delicate cycle but be sure to wash it on its own so a stitch does not snag. Indigo items may still have some residual dye remaining so be sure to wash separately. Hand wash or delicate machine cycle and gentle detergent for cotton block print scarves.
Note...
Colours of items can appear different on differing devices but I try my best to show the items true colours by photographing in natural daylight with a touch of sunshine!
The nature of Kantha means these vintage fabrics can have small marks, tears, worn areas, fraying etc. Please note there are sometimes also small marks on the rustic leather straps where they have been passed through sewing machines. All these things add to their vintage charm.
